Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) Courses

The Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) was founded over 50 years ago to serve the needs of a growing wine industry. Today, it's recognized as the global leader in wine education, operating in 70 countries. Certifications are awarded through a worldwide network of Approved Program Providers. Our WSET-certified instructors lead courses designed to inspire and empower anyone looking to develop their wine knowledge - from beginners to experts, enthusiasts to professionals.

The Center for Wine Education at Linfield University is hosting classes at Chemeketa Community College's Eola campus in West Salem.


WSET 1 - Laying the Foundation  

An ideal first step, Level 1 provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately and make food and wine pairings. Well suited for those just starting, or seeking to start, a career in the wine/hospitality industry and curious consumers who want to make more informed buying decisions. The fee includes:

  • 6 hours of guided instruction
  • Course workbook (provided at first session)
  • Wine and food samples
  • 45-minute exam
In-Person Weekend Intensive:
  • One 7-hour session with a 1-hour lunch break, exam held at the end of the session

WSET 2 - Leveling Up

Building on the foundation of Level 1, Level 2 examines the world's principal and important grape varieties, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll discover the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence. Completion of Level 1 or prior experience with wine is recommended but not a pre-requisite for Level 2. The fee includes: 

  • 16 hours of guided instruction
  • Hard copy Textbook and Workbook (Shipped 2 weeks prior to course start)
  • Wine and food samples
In Person Three-Day Intensive Instruction: 
Three 7-hour sessions held on three consecutive days, a 1-hour exam at end of third session, & pre-reading of the textbook is recommended
